2023: the year of natural language interfaces
Retroactive Grade (December 2023): Correct. ChatGPT and its competitors now see over 2 billion monthly page views.
We're about to see the biggest change in how we use computers since the iPhone's App Store in 2008. Natural Language Interfaces (NLIs) will become the default way we interact with software.
Think about Figma, Canva, or Photoshop. Instead of clicking through menus and watching tutorials, you'll work with them like you're talking to a professional designer. "Make the logo bigger. No, more blue. Now add some space around it." Done.
But three things need to happen first:
Companies need to specialize these AI models. A general chatbot is useful, but a chatbot that deeply understands design, music, or coding is revolutionary. Tools like Dreambooth will make this possible.
The tools need to get faster. Training and running these models is slow and expensive. New developer tools will fix this.
Users need to learn the new language. Not code or commands – just clear ways to explain what they want. Good design will make this natural.
When everyone can use professional tools as easily as they use Google, we'll see an explosion of creativity. The power user of tomorrow isn't the person who memorized all the keyboard shortcuts. It's the person who knows how to have a conversation.
